"He is not here. He is risen, just as he said." Matthew 28:6
This verse was T's Awana verse and He has literally repeated it all week. :)
We have had an amazing week learning about Jesus Christ, our Savior. It was my intention this year that we made Easter more about Jesus, because without Him there would be no Easter!
Day 1: The Triumphant Entry
We started out our Holy Week by reading about His arrival in Jerusalem. We created our own version of the palm branches, laid our "cloaks" out and rode a donkey!
Day 2: Christ's Example to Serve
Today we talked about Jesus' example of being a servant. We read the story of Him washing the disciples feet. I let the boys walk around in the mud. They were so funny. "Mom, our feet are going to get dirty!" Um, yes. Like they've never done this before. SIGH. I then proceeded to wash their feet in the pool.
We discussed different ways we could be servants to each other and to others. T actually showed a very great example the next night. He came home from Awanas and told me that he had helped clean up after snack. I immediately pointed out how proud I was of Him and how He had been like Jesus, A Servant! He was so excited. :)
Day 3: The Last Supper
We read the story of the Last Supper then snacked on bread and juice.
For an art project today we made a stained glass cross. It called for contact paper, but I chose to use my laminator. It worked out just fine. The boys really enjoyed being allowed to use it. They thought it was pretty cool how it worked.
Day 4: Prayer in the Garden
Today we talked about prayer and how we can pray to God anytime and anywhere. We ate jelly beans and discussed the jelly bean prayer:
Day 5: Death, Burial and Resurrection
We made Resurrection Rolls for the very first time. We forgot pictures! They were so YUMMY!! It was a pretty neat visual that allowed us to see Jesus (our marshmallow) in the tomb and out of the tomb once it was came out of the oven.
One of the boys had to throw in the this little clever comment that made me laugh...
"Mom, Jesus Melted!"
Day 6: Remember
Each of these fun activities was taken from a blog I found off Pinterest. On this particular day, she discussed how she wondered as all the excitement of everything we have been learning had come to end whether her children really grasped the idea of what was being taught. It's a tough thing to see and believe when all you see are your kids arguing and tattling. Just as Thomas doubted that it was Jesus standing there before Him and asked for proof, we are always looking for proof that Jesus is moving in our kids, but it's in these moments that we need to believe that what God did in the Bible is true for us today. We need to believe withhout proof that God is alive and moving in our behalf daily! "He is working. He is bring to life which was dead even if we can't see it."
It was a great thought and I made sure we followed with her activity which was to read the story of Thomas doubting Jesus.
I used markers to draw red dots on their palms along with their name so that it would be a reminder throughout the day that Jesus loves them, died to pay the penalty for their sin, rose again and that they can put their trust in Him. (Even if they can't see him.)
Day 7: Disciples
Today we read Jesus' last words to His disciples before returning to Heaven. He instructed us to be disciples! We discussed what a disciple was and how we could follow his instructions.
"Fix these words of mine [God's] in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates," Deuteronomy 11:18-20
