Changing My Mindset

I really enjoy including unit studies into our curriculum. I believe it is just a fun and easy way to plan activities throughout our month. Our theme this month is All About Me.  What I thought would be just an "ok" theme, turned out to actually be a lot of fun. I learned a lot as I prepared for this theme.

God opened my eyes to a very crucial point as I finished preparing for our first day (something that I feel I should have already realized), that will definitely change our home-school experience forever. Having taught daycare, preschool and Kindergarten in public/"non-Christian" settings, I have been so used to presenting my themes without mentioning God. Having God as our daily focus is obviously very important to me and I definitely do include Him in it as we always begin our day with a devotion and a prayer inviting Him to join us, but what I realized I was lacking for this theme was including God in it. God has EVERYTHING to do with them and their bodies. How could I leave Him out of it? After switching my focus, I was able to create an amazing week learning about when and how God created man, why God created man and how they are "fearfully and wonderfully made" in the image of Him! It was so much fun!

These books, by Max Lucado, were so fun to include into our daily Bible time. They are cute little stories about a Maker and his "creations" (little wooden people). They are a great visualization of our Creator and how we should focus on how He views us more than how our friends or the world views us. I highly recommend them.

All ready for Calendar time (Our new pj's were a great way to kick off our first day!)

We determined that our body puzzle was just about the size of T and what his bones look like inside.

Somewhere I had heard of using hopscotch as a way of introducing words that begin with our letter of the week. It was a great way to kick off our first letter of the week, H!

  Letter H, Boys and Hammers=Heaven!      .

What kind of week would we have if we didn't play Hungry Hungry Hippos for the letter H!

Every morning, the boys listen to a recorded "morning message" from mom with some fun activity to do. They love this!  Here they are sharing with each other what they did on Wednesday (K was away at the enrichment program while T spent the day spending time with mom and C).

One of the many activities to keep C entertained and learning.

The following picture is my highlight of our first day. I was upstairs picking up our school room when K came up to say they had a surprise for me. When I came downstairs and saw this, he said, "It's a party for our first day!" They were so proud of themselves. It was then that I knew it had been a successful day and that we were going to have a lot of fun this year. These 3 are the ultimate reason I have chosen this path. It's for them that I have given up my time, days and self. I love them so much and all I desire is the ultimate best that God set them apart for.
