Nia Hao!

This week we "flew" across the United States, over the Pacific Ocean and right on over to the Continent of Asia where we landed in China. (We learned from one of our waiters that it would have taken us 11-12 hours to get there! That's like going almost to grandma's house by car. WOW!) The boys had a lot of fun as I pretended to be their captain of their plane. Our lessons came directly from their tour guide: "Mrs. Clements". They laugh and pay much more attention as I speak through my pretend microphone.

Topics we discussed were:

  • China is apart of the Continent of Asia.
  • The Capital of China is Beijing.
  • The flag and what each symbol means.
  • Red is considered a lucky color.
  • The population of China is over a billion people.
  • The religion of China ( we spent a lot of time praying for the people and the missionaries over there).
  • What items were invented there that we use here.
  • How their letters and numbers are written differently.
  • The language of China and how to say Hello, Goodbye and I love you in Mandarin Chinese.

Art Projects:

      Handmade Paper:

After it dried we practiced our Chinese numbers on it...

  Chinese Fans and Lanterns:

   Great Wall of China:

We haven't quite finished it only because I ran out of blocks. Waiting for them to come. I will post a picture once it's completed! :)

Chinese Cultural Center:

For dinner one night, we wanted to try Chinese food. Kirby was awesome and spoke with a coworker who lived in China for a year and heard of this pretty cool place. It was a fun experience.

Trying so hard. None of them lasted very long with them.

Came home with bamboo as a "souvenir"

Kirby's coworker wrote us a little Chinese and our waiter read it all to us! (Dragon)

May your sons become Dragons (kings) and your daughters become Phoenix's (Queens)

Another little souvenir. Rice noodles.

Story of the World:

This week we began our history by discussing what History is, how we all have a history and how we can find out about the history of others through notes, letters and pictures. The boys created their own personal time-lines. C cut his pictures out all by himself and glued them wherever so there really wasn't an "order" to his, but he enjoyed the cutting practice.

We then discussed how we use artifacts to determine the history of those who couldn't  write. We conducted our own little archaeological dig. We hid items that would answer questions such as:

  • What kind of food did they eat?  (hid a toy box of spaghetti)
  • What kid of transportation did they have? (hid a toy Car)
  • Did they read and write? (hid paper that had Chinese writing and a marker)
  • What kind of entertainment did they have?  (hid a toy guy and tool)

Hiding the artifacts
Finding the artifacts and carefully digging them out with a brush.
We marked off our squares and recorded what we found in each area.

C's Letter of the Week: G and Number of the Week: 4
