We finished up January learning a lot about penguins.
We learned that:
- Penguins are birds.
- Penguins can't fly.
- Penguins waddle. (We practiced this)
- Penguins eat fish.
- Penguins can swim and toboggan! (fun word)
- Penguins have to be careful of predators such as killer whales and seals.
- Penguins live in colonies (or rookeries)
- Daddy Penguins help take care of the eggs by placing them on their webbed feet.
- Antarctica is cold, icy and in the South Pole.
We read Mr. Poppers' Penguins and watched the movie. We quickly realized that there is not much in common between the two!
Taking care of our eggs, like the daddy penguins!
I didn't do a great job of taking pics of our artwork this time, but these cute little penguins were made at the library by T and C. We happened to be there the day they made these. It was perfect for our unit!
We ended our unit with writing a letter to our friends about penguins. The boys are excited to hand deliver them tomorrow at church with their little "Gifts" as well. (I apologize for them being sideways...They weren't that way on my camera and I can't figure out how to turn them!)

Our Final Solid, Liquid, Gas Experiments with Freezing:
What happens when we put milk and sugar in salt and ice and shake it for 15min?
 |
| What does ice feel like? |
 |
| Wrapping it up well! |
 |
| Putting in the salt. |
TIME TO SHAKE IT UP:

15 Minutes later (and yes, it was mainly mommy...oh and maybe daddy a little): WE HAVE ICECREAM!!!
 |
It looks a little different!
|
Tasting the outcome: (When I first had them taste it, they thought it was going to taste yucky. I hadn't told them we were making ice cream. :) )
 |
| He doesn't do so well with cold things. |
Painting with ice:
 |
| We froze color water and painted. |
 |
I thought they turned out pretty cool.
|
We can't talk about freezing water without eating Popsicles!!
