Today, we began by reading The Wolf's Chicken Stew. It is about a wolf who likes to eat. He is in the mood for Chicken stew so he sets out to find a chicken. Once he finds one, he decides that he isn't plump enough so he sets out to fatten him up by making him 100 pancakes, 100 donuts and a few other items in sets of 100 that he leaves at the chicken's doorstep on a daily basis. We discussed whether we thought the chicken had actually eaten all the food himself. They didn't think he had so they didn't think that he would be fat when the wolf saw him again. Sure enough, we find out at the end of the story that when the wolf meets him at the door, that the chicken had 100 little chicks who thoroughly enjoyed everything the wolf had left them.
Daddy then challenged us to see if our family could eat 100 pancakes. We made a graph guessing whether we were able to eat them all or not. I honestly knew that we could not because I know how much of a recipe we typically eat, but it was fun for the kids for us all to be against daddy to see who won. :)
When I first started making the pancakes, I realised that ....ahem...Daddy (AKA as mommy).....ahem....had forgotten to ask me if I had flour. Ahem....he.....Ahem.... had forgotten that minor detail so off to the store he went. He's such a great daddy. :)As I prepared them, I was unsure exactly how much I needed to make in order to reach my goal of 100 pancakes. I chose to triple my recipe and had to make them really tiny in order to barely make 100, but I did it!! Most of them ended up being quarter to half-dollar size.

K really tried to push it so we could eat them all, but we did not. Here are the leftovers:
After we had finished reading the book and as I prepared to make the pancakes, Kirby had asked the boys to remove our oranges from the trees. At first, they weren't too thrilled, but then K came up with the idea to see if they had 100 oranges on the tree. BRILLIANT!! Love when they turn tasks into a learning opportunity. Isn't that what homeschooling is all about? So they each set out with a bag to fill it with 10 oranges. They got to 42 before they couldn't reach anymore. After Kirby had returned from the store, he apparently finished the rest so I'm unsure how many we really did have. K decided to empty all the bags before I got a picture. :(
