God's Creation...

As we have completed about 3/4 of our year, I am discovering that as I homeschool our boys I am learning so much more about my God and my Bible. He is teaching me as I teach them and it is wonderful.

Through every theme we discuss, it is completely important to me that we learn the Biblical aspects behind it all.  For the month of March, our theme is Space. As we begin to learn about what's beyond our world, I find it only appropriate to study where it all came from. How did it come to be?  I have always loved teaching this theme and love it even more now that I can include God in it. How can you study space without studying our Creator?

God actually began to prepare our family for this theme about a year or so ago through Kirby.  From many conversations through a couple of friends from church, he has really grown an interest in creation and the truth behind it. He has made some new discoveries about God, creation and space that are really going to be a huge blessing for this month. He has come across a video that we allowed the boys to watch a bit of tonight and just the little bit of what I saw really opened up my eyes even more to how HUGE space really is. I honestly had no idea that there are stars that are bigger than the sun! Really, where did I miss that information? (I honestly did not like Science or History in school so I did what I needed to do to pass. Nothing more, but as I teach it to my kids, I'm thriving to know more about it all. It's exciting to me.) Space really is uncomprehending. It's truly hard for me to understand how anyone couldn't believe in God.

So all that began our Bible studies of the 7 days of Creation...

Apart from the Bible, we also read a couple pages each day from this book that matched up to which day we were learning about. This is an Alice in Bibleland Series that I had forgotten that I had. (We had a baby Moses one I wished I had included in our Desert lessons.) It is about a girl named Alice who opens her Bible and is taken to the location of what she is reading about.

Day 1:  Genesis 1:1-5 In the Beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.  And God saw that the light was good.  Then he separated the light from the darkness.  God called the light "day" and the darkness "night."  And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.

I kind of thought this was a neat picture for it.

We discussed the differences between creating and making. Making something means that you have something to start with. The boys had actually made something that day with their Legos for the 100 day countdown o it was a perfect example of how they were given something to make their lego boat. They came up with the idea, but had the materials to use. When God created the world, he was given nothing. The earth was formless and empty. There was nothing! He said it and it was.

Day 2: Genesis 1:6-8 Then God said, "Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth."  And that is what happened.  God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens.  God called the space "sky."  And evening passed and morning came, marking the second day.

Today we discussed that when the boys look in the sky, they don't see water, so we discussed why it stated that he "separated the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens". I asked if there was ever water that came from the sky which of course led them to state rain. I also talked to them about clouds.

The night before we studied Day 2, I mentioned that we would be making our own clouds. K, could not wrap his mind around this at all. He is very particular with details, so he wanted to know everything right then. My mistake for mentioning it! He was adamant that we could not and I only meant cotton balls. After our experiment, he discovered that he was wrong.

Ingredients: Glass with 2in. of warm water, matches, spoon and a tray of ice.

Step 1: Stir the water (not sure why, but a video I saw said to do it.)
Step 2: Light a match.
Step 3: place the match in the water and let the smoke dissipate (although, we found you could see it better if you didn't let it dissipate)

Step 4: Place the ice on top and see the cloud underneath. (Again, I'd place this on immediately after you throw the match in the water.)

Step 4: Check out the cloud!

Day 3:  Genesis 1:9-13 Then God said, "Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear."  And that is what happened.  God called the dry ground "land" and the waters "seas."  And God saw that it was good.  Then God said, "Let the land sprout with vegetation- every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees from which they came."  And that is what happened.  The land produced vegetation- all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit.  Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind.  And God saw that it was good.  And evening passed and morning came, marking the third day.

Today after we learned what God created, we didn't do much other than color our worksheets and create our crafts.

Day 4: Genesis 1:14-19 Then God said, "Let great lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them mark off the seasons, days, and years. Let these lights in the sky shine down on he earth." And that is what happened. God made two great lights, the sun and the moon- the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day.

We began our March Space theme by studying the Sun more in depth today. We discussed that it is the closest star, yet not the largest star. We also learned that it is the center of our solar system and that all 8 planets rotate around it. We discussed the names of the planets and are beginning to learn the order. (We even talked about poor Pluto and how it is no longer considered a planet.) We also discussed that although planets aren't mentioned, we can only assume that the planets were created on the fourth day.

As we continue to study in detail the planet, we have taken a break from our Creation theme and will pick it back up once Space has finished.

For each day, we colored a coordinating worksheet, created a craft and I hung a clip on our 7 Day Creation  Clothespin Line.

We also learned a a new section of this song for each day:
